Registered indications (Dairy cattle)
Rumensin Capsule is registered as an aid in reduced bloat; increased milk production; and the treatment and prevention of sub-clinical ketosis.
Proven health and performance benefits
Six large-scale trials in Australia and New Zealand demonstrated Rumensin Capsule increased milk production in treated cows by up to 1.1 L/day, regardless of whether bloat conditions existed or not.(1) In the four trials where bloat was observed, just 1% of treated animals experienced moderate or severe bloat, even under high bloat conditions, compared to 24% of untreated cows. Another Australian trial found that cows treated with Rumensin Capsule recorded an average of 2.2 litres of increased milk production per day over 98 days compared to untreated cows.(2)
How Rumensin Capsule works
Rumensin is a naturally-derived product which alters the composition of the microbial population in the rumen. In effect, it increases the production of propionic acid, the most efficient of the volatile fatty acids needed for milk production and growth. Put simply, this means more energy in the feed is made available to the animal from every mouthful consumed, regardless of feed intake or the level of supplementary feeding. Besides increasing feed efficiency, the active ingredient in Rumensin reduces methane gas production and the build-up of foam in the rumen associated with bloat. Rumensin also exerts powerful anticoccidial activity.
Effect of Rumensin on volatile fatty acid production
(molar percentage)(3)
Besides increasing energy efficiency, the active ingredient in Rumensin acts in several other ways to reduce methane gas production and the build-up of foam in the rumen associated with bloat:
- Reduced production of methane in rumen
- Inhibition of encapsulated bacteria and protozoa that contribute to foam formation
- Increased rumen pH, preventing foam formation
- Decreased rumen fluid viscosity
Administration details
Rumensin Capsule is administered orally using a special applicator to cattle weighing a minimum of 200 kg. The capsule should be administered at least one week before cattle are introduced to bloat-provocative pastures. Cattle should not be retreated for at least 100 days.
