Tylan® 50 Premix (Dairy)

Tylan is registered for the control of liver abscesses in dairy cattle. Used in combination with Rumensin, Tylan helps to create a stable rumen environment and reduce the incidence of liver abscesses associated with the rumenitis/acidosis complex.

Registered indications

Tylan 50 Premix is registered for the control of liver abscesses in dairy cattle.

The acidosis/rumenitis/liver abscess complex

Liver abscesses occur when bacteria, particularly Fusobacterium necrophorum, enter the circulatory system after the rumen wall is damaged by rumenitis. These ulcerations can be caused by viral infection, physical injury or digestive upsets, such as acidosis. North American research indicates that up to 60% of grainfed cattle are affected by liver abscesses at some stage, with about 20% of carcasses affected at slaughter.(1) Although Tylan is specifically registered for the reduced incidence of liver abscesses, in vitro studies have demonstrated tylosin is also highly effective against gram-positive microbes associated with the acidosis/rumenitis complex, including those which produce lactic acid.(2) This efficacy may explain Tylan’s additive effect in improving feed efficiency and milk production when used in conjunction with Rumensin.(3)

The challenge of metabolic disease in dairy cows

Proven performance and health benefits

Research and commercial experience have demonstrated that Tylan has a proven additive effect when used in combination with Rumensin.(1,2). In one Australian study, dairy cows fed Tylan in combination with Rumensin maintained higher milk production and gained an additional 7.4 kg body weight compared to control animals.(3)

When to use Tylan

Tylan is ideal for use in combination with Rumensin throughout the lactation. It is particularly beneficial for situations which are conducive to increased incidence of metabolic disorders:

  • Twice daily (slug) grain feeding programs
  • Diets containing highly-fermentable carbohydrates:
    • Lush springtime pasture
    • Low pH, low fibre silage
    • High levels of grain or concentrated rations
  • Irregular or rapid increases in energy intake
  • High production herds

How Tylan works

Tylan is a proven antimicrobial developed by Elanco specifically for use in livestock. Added to dairy rations, Tylan controls predominantly gram-positive organisms, but is also active against certain spirochetes, large viruses and gram-negative organisms associated with liver abscesses, including Fusobacterium necrophorum and Actinomyces pyogenes. Its active ingredient, tylosin, works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis by ribosome binding.

Feeding instructions

Complete feeds: Thoroughly mix Tylan into the ration to provide up to 11 ppm tylosin (90% dry matter). Introduce tylosin content gradually up to the desired dosage rates over 5 –7 days.

Supplementary feeds: Ensure that the amount of Tylan fed does not exceed 11 ppm tylosin of total dry matter intake (i.e. supplement plus all other feeds consumed per day). Introduce tylosin content gradually up to the desired dosage rates over 5 –7 days.
