Rumensin® 100 Premix
(Feedlot cattle)

Rumensin remains the best “all-round” ionophore for improved feedlot performance and animal health. It helps grainfed cattle to digest their food more efficiently, making more energy available from their total feed intake, as well as helping to reduce the incidence of metabolic and other diseases.

Registered indications (Feedlot cattle)

Rumensin 100 Premix is registered for improved feed efficiency; as an aid in the control of bloat in feedlot cattle; and as an aid in the prevention of coccidiosis caused by Eimeria zuernii and E. bovis.

Proven performance and health benefits

Extensive research and field trials have repeatedly demonstrated Rumensin’s ability to improve feed conversion efficiency and growth rates in feedlot cattle. Depending on the inclusion rate, the addition of Rumensin can improve average daily gain by up to 4.6% (1) and feed conversion efficiency by up to 10.6% (2) compared to untreated cattle. Rumensin also provides a number of important secondary benefits by reducing the incidence of sickness and death arising from digestive disorders, such as feedlot bloat. Rumensin’s proven effects in reducing the amount of variation in feed intake and regulation of the rumen environment can also help to alleviate the effects of heat stress. The consumption of smaller but more frequent meals, coupled with reduced methane production, helps to reduce the amount of potential heat produced from metabolism.(3) Rumensin is the only animal health product to be awarded a prestigious Environmental Technology Verification Program Certificate by the Canadian Government. To earn this unprecedented recognition, two government agencies verified that Rumensin reduces methane emissions from beef and dairy cattle by 20 percent.(4) Rumensin controls the two strains of coccidia that cause problems in feedlot cattle, Eimeria zuernii and E. bovis, at three different stages of their life cycle. (5) This superior all-round performance makes Rumensin the ionophore of choice in most Australian feedlots.

How Rumensin works

Rumensin is a naturally-derived product which alters the composition of the microbial population in the rumen. In effect, it increases the production of propionic acid, the most efficient of the volatile fatty acids needed for milk production and growth. Put simply, this means more energy in the feed is made available to the animal from every mouthful consumed, regardless of feed intake or the level of supplementary feeding. Besides increasing feed efficiency, the active ingredient in Rumensin reduces methane gas production and the build-up of foam in the rumen associated with bloat. Rumensin also exerts powerful anticoccidial activity.

Feeding instructions

Rumensin should be thoroughly mixed with other feed components to achieve a final concentration of 11–33 ppm monensin (90% dry matter basis). Titration studies have demonstrated that lower inclusion rates maximise average daily gain, while higher inclusion rates maximise feed conversion efficiency.(2) Your nutritional consultant, feed supplier or Elanco representative can help determine the most suitable inclusion level for your situation. Always read the label directions before use.
