Tylan® 50 Premix
(Feedlot cattle)

Tylan is registered for the control of liver abscesses in beef cattle. Used in combination with Rumensin, Tylan helps to create a stable rumen environment and reduce the incidence of liver abscesses associated with the rumenitis/acidosis complex.

Registered indications

Tylan 50 Premix is registered for the control of liver abscess in beef cattle.

The acidosis/rumenitis/liver abscess complex

Liver abscesses occur when bacteria, particularly Fusobacterium necrophorum, enter the circulatory system after the rumen wall is damaged by rumenitis. These ulcerations can be caused by viral infection, physical injury or digestive upsets, such as acidosis. North American research indicates that up to 60% of grainfed cattle are affected by liver abscesses at some stage, with about 20% of cattle affected at slaughter.(1) Although Tylan is specifically registered for the control of liver abscess, in vitro studies have demonstrated tylosin is also highly effective against gram-positive microbes associated with the acidosis/rumenitis complex, including those which produce lactic acid.(2) This efficacy may explain Tylan’s additive effect in improving overall feedlot performance when used in conjunction with Rumensin or Naravin.(3)

Proven performance and health benefits

The pooled results of 40 trials involving almost 7,000 steers and heifers found Tylan reduced the incidence of liver abscess in feedlot cattle by 73%, as well as improving average daily gain by 2.1% and feed conversion efficiency by 2.6%.(3) Large-scale commercial trials have demonstrated that Tylan can further improve feedlot performance when added to rations containing either Rumensin or Naravin, even when the incidence of liver abscesses is low.(4,5) The pooled results of 14 trials showed the addition of Tylan to rations containing Rumensin improved average daily gain by an additional 2.4% and feed conversion efficiency by an additional 2.1%, compared to Rumensin alone.(4) In the five trials where the incidence of liver abscesses was low (<15%), the addition of Tylan to rations containing Rumensin improved average daily gain by an additional 3.9% and feed conversion efficiency by an additional 1.1% compared to Rumensin alone.(4) This improvement in feed efficiency was even greater in the nine trials where liver abscesses was high (>15%). The proven additive benefits of Tylan upon feedlot performance more than justify its inclusion in the ration.

How Tylan works

Tylan is a proven antimicrobial developed by Elanco specifically for use in livestock. Added to the rations of cattle, Tylan controls predominantly gram-positive organisms, but is also active against certain spirochaetes, large viruses and gram-negative organisms associated with liver abscesses, including Fusobacterium necrophorum and Actinomyces pyogenes. Its active ingredient, tylosin, works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis by ribosome binding.

Feeding instructions

Tylan 50 Premix should be thoroughly mixed with other feed components to achieve a final concentration of 11 ppm tylosin (90% dry matter). Introduce tylosin content gradually up to the desired dosage rates over 5–7 days. Always read the label directions before use.
