Registered indications
Elector PSP is registered for the control of house flies (Musca domestica), stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans) and darkling beetles (Alphitobius diaperinus) in and around agricultural animal premises.
Proven control of darkling beetle
The strategic use of Elector PSP provides effective control of darkling beetle populations when applied as a low-pressure coarse spray to clean floors before fresh litter is added. Maximum reduction in beetle populations occurs five to seven days after application. In a field study conducted in south-east Queensland, the application of spinosad as a whole-floor treatment (720 ppm @ 10 L/100 m2) or as an under feed-line treatment (1,440 ppm @ 10 L/100 m2) reduced pest numbers by 25–50%.(1) Note that this study used different dilution and application rates to those listed on the registered Australian label for Elector PSP. There was no change in the susceptibility of darkling beetles to the active ingredient in Elector PSP even after four consecutive treatments.
How Elector PSP works
Elector contains the active ingredient, spinosad, which is derived from the naturally-occurring soil bacterium, Saccharopolyspora spinosa. Once absorbed or ingested, spinosad causes prolonged involuntary muscle contractions and tremors, resulting in paralysis and death. Spinosad has extremely low mammalian toxicity and poses minimal risk for farm workers when used in accordance with the label directions. Spinosad belongs to the spinosyn class of compounds and is effective against insects that are resistant to other compounds.
Application details – darkling beetle
Light infestations: Mix Elector PSP at 250 mL per 150 L of water to achieve the desired concentration of 800 ppm. Heavy infestations: Mix Elector PSP at 250 mL per 75 L of water to achieve the desired concentration of 1,600 ppm.
Apply Elector PSP as a low-pressure coarse spray at a rate of one litre per 12 square metre to clean floor areas immediately before litter is spread. Apply to floor area, especially under feed and water lines, and to walls and support beams. Application should also be made into cracks and crevices around insulation or wherever pests have been seen or can find protection. Control can be enhanced by spraying the perimeters of poultry structures to prevent adult beetles from migrating indoors.

Application details – nuisance flies
Mix Elector PSP at 250 mL per 150 L of water to achieve the desired concentration of 800 ppm. Apply Elector PSP at a rate of one litre per 12 square metre directly to fly resting areas, including side walls, building ends and the upper sides of posts and crossbeams. Do not allow run-off to occur. Apply every 7–10 days once fly populations reach nuisance levels. Spray early in the morning when flies are resting. Control can be enhanced by treating manure heaps or decaying organic matter to prevent maggot proliferation.

General guidelines
Elector PSP should be applied in accordance with good agricultural practices. Do not expose livestock to direct spray. Remove or cover all feed and water troughs from the area and allow treated surfaces to dry completely before restocking. Do not apply as a fog or space spray. Do not allow Elector PSP concentrate, spray run-off or used containers to enter dams, ponds, waterways or drains. Avoid direct application or spray drift onto beehives.
