Registered indications
Demize is registered for the control of biting and sucking cattle lice (Bovicola bovis, Haematopinus eurysternus, Solenopotes capillatus and Linognathus vituli), House fly (Musca domestica), Stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans), and synthetic pyrethroid susceptible Buffalo fly (Haematobia irritans exigua) on cattle.
Proven control of lice
Demize controls all four of the major species of biting and sucking lice found in Australia. Field trials conducted throughout southern Australia have demonstrated that Demize provided equivalent or superior lice control compared to deltamethrin, the active ingredient in a commonly-used parasiticide.(1) Demize eradicated Biting lice (B. bovis) in 5/5 trials and Short-nosed sucking lice (H. eurysternus) in 3/5 trials. Demize provided better control of Long-nosed sucking lice (Linognathus vituli) in 4/5 trials (P<0.1) and was significantly more effective than deltamethrin against Small blue sucking lice (Solenopotes capillatus) in 1/2 trials (P<0.05).
Proven control of nuisance flies
Demize protects cattle from irritation by significantly reducing the size of Stable fly and House fly populations. In one small pen study, Demize reduced the number of flies infesting treated cattle by more than 80% four days after application.(2) A field efficacy trial demonstrated Demize was at least 89% effective seven days after treatment and at least 73% effective 11 days after treatment.(3) By comparison, deltamethrin was at least 81% and 65% effective seven days and 11 days after treatment. Efficacy was calculated as the percentage reduction in fly numbers compared to fly numbers three days before treatment. Demize also provides excellent control of SP-susceptible populations of Buffalo fly. Field trials conducted in Queensland demonstrated Demize achieved more than 95% efficacy against Buffalo flies for three to 14 days after application, depending on the resistance status of the local fly population.(4) Heavy rainfall occurring immediately after treatment had no adverse impact on efficacy.
How Demize works
Demize contains 25 g/L of the active ingredient, zeta-cypermethrin, which belongs to the synthetic pyrethroid class of insecticides. Synthetic pyrethroids are structural analogues of natural compounds derived from the pyrethrum daisy, Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium. SP compounds kill parasites by interfering with the nervous system, leading to tremors, inability to feed and ultimately death. Zeta-cypermethrin has a higher proportion of the biologically-active “S-isomers” and a lower proportion of the relatively-inactive "R-isomers" than cypermethrin.
Application details
Demize is applied at 10 mL per 100 kg body weight using the recommended applicator. Restrain cattle in a race or crush during application. Pour product evenly along the backline from the poll to the base of the tail. Do not apply as a single spot or to areas of the skin that have pre-existing lesions. Do not re-treat animals within three weeks. Always read the label directions before use.
